In the 35 minute Ryan Giggs put Utd ahead but new signing Florent Malouda pulled the score level before half-time.
Van der Sar made saves from Claudio Pizarro, Frank Lampard and Shaun Wright-Phillips to leave Wayne Rooney to score the winning spot-kick.
